What is something I can do to better keep my body and mind in balance?

The first and most important thing to do to keep yourself in balance is to stop doing things that take you out of balance. The previous blog posts on strengthening immunity, how to keep agni(digestive fire) strong, and how to balance vata dosha include extensive information on the things we do that cause imbalance. Your body mind and spirit naturally want to return to a state of balance and harmony.

A few simple suggestions to support balance and inner connection are:

*cultivate internal stillness; meditate each day, start with five minutes of quiet sitting, disconnecting from everything on the outside. It will make a big difference.

*practice periods of silence, meaning take a few hours, half a day or even a whole day, without talking. Practice quieting your mind by focusing on the breath during this time of silence. You may also want to use a mantra, prayer, or significant passage on which to focus.

*live on a regular schedule of sleep, eating, work, and recreation. Lack of sleep causes imbalance in the body and mind.

*eat only foods that support your well being; check in with how you are feeling throughout each day; use a wellness journal such as that in my book, Freedom in Your Relationship with Food: An Everyday Guide, to assist you in seeing the true patterns of your living and how to adjust them to your well being.

*do less and be more.

How do I listen more to my own life experiences and less to what I've been told/read in books/seen in movies?

When we expose ourselves to something, such as watching a movie, reading a book, or the opinions of others, our psyche consumes it. In the name of entertainment or education we can blindly take on lies, negativity and unconsciousness. These remain present in our energy field as unresolved impressions. They become part of our daily experience; the load we carry around. In Yoga this is called a samskara. We will repeatedly place ourselves in situations to challenge the lie we have accepted, in order to find our truth.

Often we will avoid parts of our life where we have accepted someone else's truth as our own. We may feel an inner conflict as a child or teenager when our ideas differ from those of our parents. We may not realize what is happening at the time. As a healthy part of maturing, we begin to sift through things, referencing our own experience, keeping what feels true and letting the rest go. If we don't give ourselves the opportunity to draw on our own life experience, we feel disconnected. This disconnect creates suffering, sarcasm, and negativity. We can find a new freedom when we take an honest look inside at the underlying reason for the avoidance and take our own path.

Learn to pause before responding and ask "what is true for me here?" Answering the question offers choices. When we choose to be aware of what drives our decision making process, real connection with our higher Self is possible. Responding out of obligation, resentment, fear, or to avoid disruption will not bring us to our truth and joyful living. Think of it like shopping, you have to sort through things to see what appears to fit. Then you try it on and you might choose something else if it is not right. Life is an exploration rather than a test. Self honesty will bring great rewards of relief, inner peace, and clarity.

With regular practice of meditation and clearing one's energy, we can learn to clear negative impressions and connect to our inner voice, the God within.

Happy New Year!

Who am I?

Be Still and Know that I Am God.

Some say this encompasses the teachings of Christ. In the Bhagavad Gita Krishna reminds Arjuna that the entire universe is present in the Lord of Love within. Looking at all of the traditions we can find this same meaning.

Our answers are inside if we will but go there for them. Take this day to go inside and enjoy the beauty of who we all are.

What is "living life from the inside out"?

Living from the inside out is coming from our deepest knowing rather than just our thinking. For those of us who have practiced thinking our way around the world for many years, there are practices to help us learn to connect to our innermost self for living. And it feels so good when it happens. Beyond words.

Here is a beautiful writing from my niece, Katie Lewin, 16 years, a budding Yogini.

Peace is a quiet hum in your chest-
that's how it starts anyway.
the more you let go,
of worry and fear and "what if"
the louder it becomes and the farther it spreads.
When you look at all people and animals
with equal amounts of understanding,
your eyes will smile even if your mouth is not.
When you speak truth,
you will cast a spell on those around you
and your glowing words will become inspiration.
When you hear all and judge no one,
people will come to you for comfort
and you will be flattered.
When you stretch and let fearful imaginings
leave your head,
your body will respond and you will do all
things physical with ease and confidence:
there is no wave too big, or mountain too high.
When you love what you see in the mirror,
however ugly you think you are,
you will obtain a beauty so striking
it will be compared to the moon and sun.
When you are kind,
When you disregard fear,
When you listen to your breath
more than your parents,
When you laugh every laugh
cry every tear
and forgive those who trespass against you,
you will know peace and you will glow
like lightning bugs in summer...
you will live forever.

Have a wonderful week. Check out the new recipe post for sweet potato snack.
